In my new urban fantasy novel, Resurgence, I had a lot of fun coming up with the different kinds of demons. I wanted there to be a set of them, each with different powers and goals. But I think I had the most fun writing about the lilins.
Sex Sells, Baby
Lilin is basically the old word for succubus. In ancient Mesopotamian demonology, they were night spirits that attacked men. When I was putting together the world, I wanted to slide in a lust demon. Because, c’mon. Lust demons are badass.
Lilins use a combination of pheromones in the air and magical glamour to entrap humans. Usually, the lilin entices you back to their bed, gives you the best sex of your life, and then you’re hooked. Of course, you could wean yourself off. But most are too wrapped up and beg for transition. And that’s how they get ya!
Freyja, The Belu Lilin and Nunzia
The very first lilin demon is Freyja, who you might have seen around other urban fantasy novels as a Norse goddess of love and sexuality. For the lilins, I kept their mythology centered in northern Europe and had Freyja’s original emergence point in northern Germany. Coincidentally, that’s where Jack’s family’s from as well and how they get into demon hunting.
In Resurgence, the demon lord of Atlanta is also a lilin. When I was envisioning Nunzia, I thought a Paula Dean-type woman, your typical southern grandma with teased white hair and ruby red lips. In her case, she uses her pheromones to both coerce humans and run a successful empire of restaurants.

Demon hunter Jack Grenard’s life changed three years ago when his wife was brutally murdered by the very demons he’d been hunting. At the urging of his partner Cam Macarro, he’s starting a new life in Atlanta, hoping he’ll find the man he used to be. But on a routine hunt, they come across a new type of demon–one that saves instead of kills.
Meanwhile, demons across Atlanta are preparing for the quadrennial uprising of their Underworld brethren. Worse yet, there’s a rumor the so-called king of the demons, Bael, will appear for the first time in over a century. Jack and Cam must uncover the truth about the mystery woman before all hell–literally–breaks loose.
